ABUSE RECOVERY

Individual can fully recover from abuse. Many clever successful people attribute their success to their suffering, supporting the idea that what we survive makes us stronger.

It is essential that therapist undertaking work with individuals from extreme abuse, recognise their limits and avoid fanciful quick methods. This approach is often tied up with a therapist’s inability to manage details of the suffering of others.

There are three Key Processes involved in Abuse recovery:

1. Obtaining an accurate recollection of all of the circumstances surrounding the abuse and understanding how this may be impacting on
the person at the time.

2. Debriefing: This will be dependent upon the degree of the abuse, the recollection, the perpetrator and the age at the time of the abuse.

3. Goal Setting for the Future. Using the new insights, wisdom and courage from effective therapy has the potential to lead to new horizons.
