ASSERTIVE MEANS

1. Feeling sure of yourself and comfortable in most situations.
2. Being confident and responding with logic not emotion in difficult situations.
3. Responding honestly but with diplomacy and tact.
4. Standing up for your rights when they are infringed upon.
5. Feeling self respect and respect from others.
6. Saying no when you mean no, without discomfort.
7. Sharing both positive and negative feelings without shame or embarrassment.

Passive people do not stand up for their rights when they are infringed upon. They report feelings of depression. Aggressive people behave in a hostile and/or offensive way which infringes on the rights of others. Because aggression breeds aggression - aggressive people report feelings of loneliness and low popularity.

Passive-aggressive people are afraid to be assertive and “get even” in less obvious ways (gossip, double messages, sarcasm ). Most people who use these behaviors know in their heart it is wrong and would prefer to be upfront in dealing with others.
